House of SpiritsHouse of Spirits4. Isabel Allende’s use of syntax, style, point of view, and figurative language all add to “Allende’s gift for dramatic detail”. Locate three pivotal examples of Allende’s style that makes The House of the Spirits a major work of humanistic fiction. Defend your choice of these examples by explaining how they support essential concepts within the novel.

3.   Allusions, especially those historical and political, are used throughout the novel, The House of the Spirits.  Discuss three historical or political allusions found in the novel and explain their importance to the plot development.  Further, research and determine how accurate their portrayal within the novel is to actual historical and political facts.

2.     Words and stories have a special significance in The House of the Spirits and support the theme of language and meaning.  Give three specific examples of major transitions that occur in the novel involving ”naming” and/or stories and explain how each supports the theme of language and meaning.

In the House of the Spirits, transitions are made throughout the entire novel especially through the names of the main characters. Thes transitions help support the theme of language and meaning along with the characterization. In the female side Clara, Blanca, and Alba are all names that when transalated to their original content mean something light and pure.  Clara meaning clear, blanca maning white, and Alba signifying the moment when the sun comes up and everything is light. The translation of the names through each generation shows the inheritance of traits. Another important character in the novel that has a meaningful name is Transito Soto. Transito , as previously describedby my fellow classmates, means transition. This is significant because every time Esteban Trueba met with this prostitute a change is about to occur. A third example of transitions throoughout the novel is the Garcia family. Allende repeats their names (Pedro Garcia, Pedro Segundo Garcia, y Pedro Tercero Garcia) to show the characteristics of all the men are the same in that family.

it is also important to ask yourself why the  author chose to focus so much attention on the names of the characters?Who knows?
